Maryam Nawaz's Initiatives for Affordable Travel: Free Train Tickets for This Eid?

 



Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has been actively working to make public transportation more accessible and affordable for the people of Punjab. Her recent announcements focus on modernizing transport, introducing eco-friendly options, and providing relief to vulnerable groups like students, women, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities.

While there has been no official announcement from CM Maryam Nawaz or the Punjab government specifically offering free train tickets for this upcoming Eid (whether Eid ul-Fitr or Eid ul-Adha in 2026), her administration has rolled out several pro-people transport schemes. For instance, free or discounted travel has been provided on Green Bus Services and electric buses for targeted groups.




Pakistan Railways, which operates inter-city and long-distance trains, typically announces special Eid trains and fare discounts independently (such as percentage reductions during the festive rush). However, these are federal-level decisions rather than provincial ones led by Maryam Nawaz.



During major events like Basant 2026, the Punjab government under Maryam Nawaz provided free public transport in Lahore, including buses, Metrobus, and Orange Line services, to ease congestion and help citizens celebrate. Similar facilities exist for certain categories on green buses across Punjab.







Eid travel in Pakistan often sees massive crowds heading home by train, leading to packed stations and trains. Affordable or free options would greatly benefit families, especially in Punjab where millions travel between cities like Lahore, Multan, Faisalabad, and Rawalpindi.

Maryam Nawaz's transport vision includes expanding electric and green initiatives, trackless trains, and more. While free train tickets haven't been confirmed for this Eid, her track record suggests potential relief measures could be announced closer to the festival to support hassle-free travel.
